TENUTA ROCCA Vigna Sori Rocca, Dolcetto D'Alba

THE WINE
Tenuta Rocca Dolcetto D'Alba comes entirely from the Vigna Sorí Rocca Vineyard site. A "sorí" in Piemontese denotes a vineyard area that gets sunlight all day. Sorí Rocca is in an excellent position, steep and breezy, with a south-east exposure. The limestone-clay soil is ideal for viticulture. Production rarely exceeds 15,000 bottles per year. A green harvest optimizes the quality of the yield.
After a manual harvest, the Dolcetto D'Alba ferments in stainless steel at cool temperatures. Oak aging is avoided to insure the fresh, fruitiness of the wine. The resulting wine is not a typical, commercial, grapey, jammy Dolcetto. It is dry, well structured and complex, capable of developing in the bottle for 5-6 years. Tenuta Rocca Dolcetto D'Alba Vigna Sorí Rocca is generally considered one of the very best Dolcettos made in a serious manner.

THE VINE
Dolcetto is a rich skinned, early ripener with low acidity. There are 7 D.O.C. zones in Piedmont, the most important of which are Alba and Diano d’Alba. A short fermentation keeps tannin levels low without compromising the rich purple to ruby color. It is often compared to French Beaujolais. Dolcetto wines are at their best young. It is known as Ormeasco in Liguria and has been identified with the Douce Noire of Savoie in France.
