CORTE PAVONE Rosso di Montalcino

THE WINE
Corte Pavone Rosso di Montalcino is made from 100% Sangiovese Grosso, which is called locally Brunello, because of the brownish cast to its berries. Montalcino, the village where the wine is from, takes its name from the “ILEX”, or oak tree. “Mons Ilcinus” or Montalcino is a town which has been producing wine since the Etruscan era, even before the Ancient Romans. Corte Pavone Rosso di Montalcino is made from younger vines than some of its Brunello brothers. It is aged in large Slavonian casks, mid-sized Austrian barrels and small French barriques – all oak – for a total of one year. It is a fruity, dry, satisfying red that will develop in the bottle for a decade. If you like good Chianti, try this.

THE VINE
The Sangiovese is a red grape varietal that dates to the Roman classical era. Its etymology, “Sangue di Giove” (“Blood of Jupiter”) is an indication of its power and grandeur. It is one of Italy’s most important grapes, producing Brunello di Montalcino and providing the basis for Chianti, Chianti Classico, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and many other Tuscan reds.
