Fattoria Lavacchio

In a land renowned for special places, Fattoria Lavacchio may well be the most brilliant star among agricultural properties. The farm dates back to 1700 and consists of 110 hectares (about 275 acres). Almost half are olive groves. You will find woods, wheat, even truffles, a large garden with fruits, vegetables, rabbits and chickens, all grown and raised organically. There are ceramic and cooking classes, horseback and mountain bike riding and a distinctive agriturism, less than 30 minutes from Florence. Add a restaurant and a restored windmill. This Tuscan paradise is run by Faye Lottero and her husband Dimitri. Fattoria Lavacchio was purchased by the Lottero family in 1978. Oh, by the way, they also produce organic wines of quality, made by Alberto Antonini. Typical, indigenous varietals are grown, as well as international rarities, such as Traminer, Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc and specially selected clones of Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Clearly Fattoria Lavacchio is worth a side trip. The emblematic landmark of the estate is a lofty cedar tree (cedro), planted centuries ago. Fattoria Lavacchio in the Tuscan dialect means “the place where wild boar cleanse themselves”.
